Electronic Magazines, Publishers & Sites
Electronic Magazines
We have listed some of the magazines available that we think are related to manufacturing.
- Wired Online: Broaden your imagination with this delightfully futuristic read.
- Manufacturing Engineering: SME's standard
magazine online. It includes most, but not all, of the articles in the printed magazine. There's also a fairly extensive buyer's
guide and links to SME newsletters.
- Lean Directions: An SME newsletter about Lean Manufacturing.
- Manufacturing and Technology News: This magazine seems to require a paid subscription ($400-$500 pa, Sept 2003) to access most of the magazine.
Free information includes potentially interesting guest editorials and a list of reports about manufacturing and the economy.
- Plastics News: Lots of articles about plastics, information about pricing and selection of materials, special reports about
various aspects of the industry, and editorials. Full access requires a subscription ($69 pa in Sept. 2003).
Commercial Publishers
Here are some publishers and sources of technical books that you may find useful.
- Amazon.com: A great place to buy your obscure technical books at a good price, if you know what you're looking for. A full-service
gas station masquerading as a U-pump.
- ASTM Home Page: Standards documents for sale.
- ISO: More standards documents for sale.
- Marcel Dekker: Publishes useful technical books.
- SME International: Click on "Books and Video Store" for a wide variety of topics in manufacturing.
Other Commercial Sites
Some of these provide useful services for manufacturing.
Other Sites
These are mostly sites of regulatory agencies of the federal and Tennessee state governments. There are also some sites
for the State of Tennessee listed above under Government Agencies that may be able to help you with questions of taxes and
regulation.
- ISO (Standards Org.), This is mostly a commercial site designed to sell documents, but it does give fairly extensive information
about the structure and management of ISO and descriptions of ISO9000 and ISO14000. Your editor was struck by the pervasiveness
of their system of standards.
- OSHA: The folks we know and love. You can imagine your own scatological pronunciation for their acronym.
- TOSHA: Tennessee's state version of OSHA.
- EPA: US Environmental Protection Agency. (Forewarned is forearmed.)
- Tenn. Dept. of Environment and Conservation: Tennessee's version of the EPA.
- INSECURE.ORG: Tools for assessing the security of your computer networks.
- Red Hat: A leading linux distribution. You will find links to their security database and to information about supported
hardware.
- SuSE: Another leading linux distribution with nifty set-up and administration tools. The site gives links to security
announcements (if you're persistant) and to technical support.
- Microsoft Corp. (security support): Get the latest help at keeping the vandals out of your Windows box.
